{"id":1645,"date":"2012-06-09T13:19:13","date_gmt":"2012-06-09T17:19:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/?p=1645"},"modified":"2019-07-09T09:47:12","modified_gmt":"2019-07-09T13:47:12","slug":"the-mystery-of-the-colonel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/2012\/06\/09\/the-mystery-of-the-colonel\/","title":{"rendered":"The Mystery of the Colonel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My favourite logo design EVER \u00a0is the 1978 redesign for Kentucky Fried Chicken by the design agency Lippincott and Margulies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1646\" title=\"Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket 1978\" src=\"http:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc-bucket.jpg\" alt=\"Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket 1978\" width=\"500\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc-bucket.jpg 500w, https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc-bucket-150x144.jpg 150w, https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc-bucket-300x289.jpg 300w, https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc-bucket-310x300.jpg 310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Amongst many, many other iconic projects, this agency designed the classic logos for Betty Crocker &amp; Chevron, the classic Campbell&#8217;s soup can immortalized by Andy Warhol, and they created the white swoosh brand for Coca-Cola.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the 1940s, our founder Gordon Lippincott coined the term &#8220;corporate identity&#8221;.<br \/>\nHe proposed that companies brand themselves with the same thoughtfulness and creativity typically reserved for their products.<br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lippincott.com\/ \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lippincott.com<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1648 alignright\" title=\"Kentucky Fried Chicken 1978 signage\" src=\"http:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc.jpg\" alt=\"Kentucky Fried Chicken 1978 signage\" width=\"293\" height=\"293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc.jpg 293w, https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/kfc-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lippincott &amp; Margulies designed the original Kentucky Fried Chicken branding in 1952, and revisited the brand in 1978, which, to my mind, is the &#8220;classic&#8221; brand. True, this is the version I grew up with, but the departure that makes this brand redesign significant is that it was the first in which the face of Colonel Sanders was used separately as a logo from the &#8220;Kentucky Fried Chicken&#8221; logotype &#8211; in some applications, at least. The drawing style was also made less realistic, more stylized, and more iconic, creating a graphic presence with much stronger impact. In effect, by elevating the face of the Colonel to iconic status, it was able to represent the entire Kentucky Fried Chicken brand by itself. It was sometimes used \u00a0by itself on backlit signage to indicate a Kentucky Fried Chicken store in a food court setting, on container lids and other packaging, and in a few instances, glorious illuminated chicken-bucket-shaped watertowers that \u00a0would glow in the night along city highways, the immediately recognizable Colonel&#8217;s face like a beneficient deity of comfort and hominess. Are you hungry, weary traveller? Then eat of my chicken.<\/p>\n<p>The Kentucky Fried Chicken logo was revisited in 1991 with its &#8220;new look&#8221; horizontal pseudo-gradation and the usage of KFC instead of &#8220;Kentucky Fried Chicken&#8221;, reputedly to disguise the &#8220;fried&#8221; aspect. Clearly the designers were idiots, but if you own a fried chicken company and are worried about the word &#8220;fried&#8221;, sell the company to someone that appreciates the brand heritage and isn&#8217;t such a bottom-line stooge. I was unsettled. When the Colonel&#8217;s face was redone to look like some kind of grimacing mockery of itself in 1997, angled like a reeling drunkard, I was horrified. The 2007 redesign looks like a crazed Vladimir Lenin in a wig and racing-striped dirndl.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1658\" title=\"KFC branding scaled by wrongness\" src=\"http:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WRONGNESS.jpg\" alt=\"KFC branding scaled by wrongness\" width=\"390\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WRONGNESS.jpg 390w, https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WRONGNESS-150x57.jpg 150w, https:\/\/greynotgrey.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/WRONGNESS-300x115.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 390px) 100vw, 390px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When a brand is created focusing on reassuring, homey, &#8220;classic&#8221; qualities and is completely redesigned to be &#8220;fresh and edgy&#8221;, the result reeks of insincerity &#8211; and destroys all the hard work of building a &#8220;classic&#8221; brand identity that preceded it. \u00a0Gaze upon the face of the 1978 Colonel, designers, and take heed.<\/p>\n<p>One strange thing I&#8217;ve noticed is that while\u00a0KFC is generally very consistent in its branding, one\u00a0instance of the 1978 Colonel logo survives &#8211; the embossed lids of the small salad containers, at least here in Quebec. It seems strange that this one thing has remained unchanged for nearly\u00a025 years.
