Ernst Haeckel<\/a> was a Prussian polymath (scientist, artist, physician, etc.) best known as a champion of evolutionary theory. \u00a0He was a bit of a character<\/a>\u00a0(to put it lightly) and while many of his theories have been discredited such as “ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny<\/a>” and his ahem<\/em>, theories of Aryan racial superiority, he did come up with now-ubiquitous terms like\u00a0“anthropogeny”, “phylum”, “phylogeny”, and “ecology” and discovered and named literally thousands of species. More to the point of this blog, however, his work in zoology and comparative anatomy led him to make a metric heckload of amazing illustrations.<\/p>\n

Ernst Haeckel – Ascidiae<\/p><\/div>\n

Kunstformen der Natur<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0(German\u00a0for\u00a0Art Forms of Nature<\/em>) is a book of\u00a0lithographic\u00a0and\u00a0autotype\u00a0prints by\u00a0German\u00a0biologist\u00a0Ernst Haeckel. Originally published in sets of ten between 1899 and 1904 and collectively in two volumes in 1904,\u00a0it consists of 100 prints of various organisms, many of which were first described by Haeckel himself. Over the course of his career, over 1000\u00a0engravings\u00a0were produced based on Haeckel’s\u00a0sketches\u00a0and\u00a0watercolors; many of the best of these were chosen for\u00a0Kunstformen der Natur<\/em>, translated from sketch to print by lithographer Adolf Giltsch.
