I guess whoever came up with the collective terms didn&#8217;t take kindly to carrion-eaters what with &#8220;murder&#8221; of crows and &#8220;unkindness&#8221; of ravens.<\/p>\n<p>Ravens were revered by ancient Norse cultures, as they would follow battles to feast on fallen combatants.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00a0&#8230;kennings\u00a0used in Norse poetry identify the raven as the bird of blood, corpses and battle;\u00a0he is the gull of the wave of the heap of corpses, who screams dashed with hail and craves morning steak as he arrives at the sea of corpses (<em>Hlakkar hagli stokkin m\u00e1r valkastar b\u00e1ru, krefr morginbr\u00e1\u00f0ar er kemr at hr\u00e6s s\u00e6vi<\/em>).<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raven_Banner#Raven_symbolism_in_indigenous_Scandinavian_culture\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Odin had a pair of ravens &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Huginn_and_Muninn\" target=\"_blank\">Huginn and Muninn<\/a> (translating as &#8220;thought&#8221; and &#8220;memory&#8221; respectively) that would fly all over the world and report back what they had seen to Odin. That&#8217;s pretty handy, if you ask me.
